I think doing research on and developing tools to measure subjective wellbeing in humans and animals is severely neglected. We consistently use proxies for wellbeing without knowing or having a plan to know how good those proxies are. This seems like one of the most fundamental questions in EA to me (“how do you know if, and how much, a thing makes someone better off?”).
